Discover more about Bell Tower of the Annunziata Church

The Bell Tower of the Annunziata Church, located at the intersection of Evgeniou Voulgareos and Vrachlioti streets in Corfu Town, is a powerful reminder of the past. It is the only surviving structure of the Annunziata Church (also known as the Catholic Church of Lotsiada), which was built in the late 14th century. The church was dedicated to the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary and Saint Lucia. The church was founded by Neapolitan captain Petró Capece and dedicated to the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary, with the founding connected to the anniversary of the Venetian Republic on March 25th. The church held historical significance, as many Latin nobles who died during the naval Battle of Nafpaktos in 1571 were buried there. Miguel de Cervantes, the famed author of Don Quixote, was also reportedly treated in buildings belonging to the Annunziata temple after being wounded in the same battle. Tragically, the church was bombed by the Germans on September 14, 1943, during World War II. In 1953, the decision was made to demolish the remains of the church, leaving only the bell tower standing. Today, the Bell Tower of the Annunziata is considered a monument of pan-European importance due to its connection to significant historical events. It serves as a meeting point and a reminder of Corfu's rich and complex past.
