Discover more about Maitland Monument

The Maitland Monument, or Peristyle of Maitland, stands proudly at the southern end of Corfu's Spianada Square. This neoclassical structure was erected in 1821 to honor Sir Thomas Maitland, the first British Lord High Commissioner of the Ionian Islands. Designed by Colonel George Whitmore of the Royal Engineers, the monument takes the form of a circular rotunda with twenty Ionic columns. The monument's construction utilized limestone imported from Malta, reflecting the British colonial reach, as Malta was also under British rule at the time. Local sculptor Pavlos Prosalentis contributed the sculptural work. Interestingly, the monument was built atop a Venetian-era underground water cistern dating back to 1781, also known as the Cistern (Greek: Στέρνα). The two entrances to the monument provided access to this water tank. The Maitland Monument has also made its mark on popular culture, appearing in the 1981 James Bond film 'For Your Eyes Only'. The monument suffered damage from erosion over the years but was restored in 2004. Today, the Maitland Monument remains a significant historical and architectural landmark in Corfu Town, offering visitors a glimpse into the island's British colonial past.
