Spianada Square, centrally located in Corfu Town, is the largest square in Greece and one of the largest in the Balkans. Its name, derived from the Venetian term 'spianata' meaning 'level ground,' reflects its history as a large open space initially created for military defense. During the Venetian rule (14th-18th century), the area was cleared to provide a clear field of fire for the Old Fortress. Later, during the French occupation (1807-1814), the square began to take its current form, influenced by French neoclassicism. The British Protectorate (1815-1864) further shaped the Spianada into a structured green space, reflecting British aesthetics and values.The square is divided into two main sections: the Upper Square (Ano Plateia) and the Lower Square (Kato Plateia). The Upper Square features symmetrical gardens, the Maitland Monument, a Venetian fountain, and the Music Pavilion.
