Discover more about Angelokastro

Angelokastro, also known as Angel Castle, is one of the most important Byzantine castles in Greece, offering a glimpse into Corfu's rich history and strategic importance. Located near Paleokastritsa, the castle sits atop a rugged cliff, providing 360-degree views of the surrounding terrain. Built in the 13th century, Angelokastro played a vital role in defending Corfu against pirate raids and Ottoman sieges. Its strategic location allowed defenders to survey the southern Adriatic, making it a formidable vantage point. The castle was part of a defensive triangle with Gardiki Castle and Kassiopi Castle, safeguarding the island from various threats. During the Venetian rule (1386-1797), Angelokastro served as the island's capital and the seat of the local governor. The castle's fortifications were finalized during this period, withstanding numerous attacks and providing refuge for local villagers. Inside the castle walls, visitors can explore the remains of protective walls, underground cisterns, and two churches: the Church of Archangel Michael and the chapel of Agia Kyriaki. The Church of Archangel Michael was built on the ruins of an early Christian church, while the chapel of Agia Kyriaki is a cave-like structure adorned with 18th-century frescoes. Although largely in ruins today, Angelokastro remains a captivating site, offering stunning panoramic views and a tangible connection to Corfu's past.
