Discover more about Kahal Shalom Synagogue

The Kahal Shalom Synagogue, located in the Jewish Quarter of Rhodes' Old Town, is a powerful symbol of the island's long and complex Jewish history. Established in 1577, it is the oldest synagogue in Greece and one of the oldest in Europe. The synagogue's full name, "Kahal Kadosh Shalom," translates to "Holy Congregation of Peace".For centuries, Rhodes was home to a vibrant Jewish community, largely influenced by Sephardic Jews who arrived after being expelled from Spain during the Spanish Inquisition. These Sephardic Jews brought with them their traditions, culture, and the Ladino language. At its peak in the 1930s, the Jewish community numbered around 4,000. The Kahal Shalom Synagogue served as the heart of their spiritual and communal life. The synagogue's architecture reflects a blend of Sephardic and Ottoman influences. The interior features a central bimah (podium) for reading the Torah, a mosaic floor with black and white stones, and religious wall paintings. In the 1930s, a balcony was added for women's seating. An unusual feature is the presence of two Torah arks on either side of the entrance to the courtyard.Tragically, the Jewish community of Rhodes was decimated during World War II when the Nazis deported most of its members to Auschwitz. Today, Kahal Shalom stands as a memorial to those who perished and a testament to the resilience of the Jewish people. The Jewish Museum of Rhodes, housed within the synagogue complex, displays artifacts, photographs, and historical accounts that tell the story of this once-flourishing community.Visitors can explore the synagogue's historical courtyard, which features a plaque marking the location of a former water fountain built around the same time as the synagogue. Although a religious school once stood nearby, it was destroyed during World War II. Today, Kahal Shalom is used for services mainly in the summer months when Jewish tourists and descendants of Rhodesli Jews visit the island.
