Discover more about Acropolis of Rhodes

The Acropolis of Rhodes, unlike many other ancient acropoleis, was not a fortified citadel but rather a monumental zone with sanctuaries, temples, and public buildings. Dating back to the Hellenistic and Late Hellenistic periods (3rd-2nd century BC), the Acropolis is located 3 kilometers southwest of the modern city center on Monte Smith, offering stunning views of the western coast of the island. Key monuments within the archaeological site include the Temple of Athena Polias and Zeus Polieus, the Temple of Pythian Apollo (with partially reconstructed columns), a stadium, and an odeon. The 210-meter long stadium, dating back to the 3rd century BC, was once used for the Haleion Games. Northwest of the stadium lies the restored marble Odeon, which could seat 800 spectators and was likely used for musical events and rhetoric lessons. Excavations, which began in 1912 by the Italian School of Archaeology and continued after World War II by the Greek Archaeological Service, are still ongoing, with a dedicated archaeological zone of 12,500 square meters. While only a fragment of the ancient city's glorious past is visible today, the Acropolis of Rhodes remains a captivating site, blending history, architecture, and natural beauty.
