    Discover more about Kritinia Castle

Kritinia Castle, perched 131 meters above the village of Kritinia, offers a captivating glimpse into Rhodes' rich history. Known locally as Kastellos, this Venetian-style castle was constructed in the 15th century by the Knights of St. John, serving as a crucial defensive point against pirates and Ottoman fleets. The name Kritinia means 'New Crete', named by Cretan refugees who settled in the area.Strategically positioned, the castle provided a 360-degree view of the Aegean Sea, including the island of Chalki and surrounding islets. This vantage point allowed the Knights to monitor maritime traffic and defend the western coast of Rhodes. The castle's construction evolved under several Grand Masters, blending Medieval and Byzantine architectural styles. Originally, the castle was divided into three levels, each belonging to a different Grand Master. Today, only the outer defensive walls remain, bearing the coats of arms of Grand Masters D'Amboise and Origny.Inside the castle walls, visitors can explore the relics of a chapel dedicated to St. John, adorned with 16th-century wall paintings that have withstood the test of time. The Greek Archeological Services have undertaken reinforcement programs to conserve and renovate the damaged sections of the castle and church. Open 24 hours a day with free admission, Kritinia Castle offers a magical sunset view.
