Discover more about Herakleion Unknown Soldier Statue

Located in the heart of Heraklion, in Eleftherias Square, the Unknown Soldier Statue is a powerful symbol of remembrance and respect for the soldiers who have given their lives for freedom. This monument, created by artist Christoforos Natsios, depicts a soldier in full readiness, standing at approximately two meters tall. The statue is made of Pentelic marble and is adorned with wreaths during national holidays and commemorative events, particularly on the anniversary of the Battle of Crete. The monument features reliefs on three sides, portraying scenes of Cretan warriors rebelling against the Turks, a Cretan mother sending her son off to war, and the Tower of Xopatera in Messara. The front side bears engraved inscriptions. Erected in 1924 and unveiled in 1928, the Unknown Soldier Statue reflects a widespread post-World War I practice of honoring fallen soldiers when the sheer number of casualties made individual recognition impossible. Today, the statue remains a central point in Heraklion, surrounded by cafes and shops, inviting visitors to reflect on history while enjoying the city's lively ambiance.
