The Kastrinakis Flour Mill, or Αλευρόμυλος Καστρινάκη, is a historic landmark in Heraklion, Crete, bearing witness to the island's industrial past. Located near the Gate of St. George, this ruined mill has been declared a preserved industrial monument since 1997.The mill's story began in 1896 when Nikolaos Kastrinakis acquired the land, and in 1904, the first flour mill and ovens were constructed. In 1927, it was modernized into a roller mill equipped with state-of-the-art machinery. By 1953, warehouses were added, and it also functioned as a feed mill. For nearly 80 years, the Kastrinakis mill supplied flour to the entire island of Crete.However, the factory couldn't keep pace with the rapid technological advancements of the 20th century and declared bankruptcy in 1976. Today, the ruined mill stands as a silent testament to a bygone era, awaiting restoration.
