Discover more about Archaeological Museum of Ioannina

The Archaeological Museum of Ioannina, situated in the heart of the city within Litharitsia Park, serves as the primary repository for ancient artifacts discovered in the Epirus region. Established in 1970, the museum's exhibits span a vast period, from the Lower Paleolithic era (approximately 250,000 years ago) to the late Roman period. The museum's collection is displayed across seven halls, a main corridor, and three atriums, encompassing a total area of 1,200 square meters. The exhibits illustrate the historical trajectory of human presence in Epirus, highlighting aspects of daily life, economy, and social organization across various settlements. Key exhibits include Paleolithic tools from sites like Kokkinopilos, Asprochaliko and Kastritsa, artifacts from ancient cemeteries, and a significant collection from the sanctuary of Dodoni. The Dodoni display features a site layout, lead tablets inscribed with questions to the oracle, and reconstructed armor of Epirote Alliance generals. The museum also houses inscriptions, tombstones, and a collection of coins, providing a comprehensive overview of Epirus's ancient past. The museum building, designed by architect Aris Konstantinidis in the early 1960s, is itself an example of Greek modernist architecture.
