    From the center of Monemvasia town, walk south towards the castle exit. Continue along the main road (Paleologou Street) for about 2 km. After passing the castle walls, turn left onto the Unnamed Road. Walk for about 1 km to reach Ancient Asopos. This scenic walk offers views of the landscape. No costs involved.

    From Monemvasia town, head south on the main road (Paleologou Street) towards the castle exit. Continue for about 2 km and turn left onto the Unnamed Road, following it for approximately 1 km until you reach the archaeological site. Free parking is available near the entrance. Note that during the summer, parking near Monemvasia can be difficult.

  • Public Transport

    While limited, you can take a bus from Monemvasia to the nearest village, approximately 2 km from Ancient Asopos. From there, walking is required. Check local bus schedules for times and fares. Single fares typically cost around €1-€3.

Ancient Asopos, situated near the charming town of Monemvasia, offers a captivating journey into the past. This archaeological site, located on the eastern side of the Lakonikos Gulf, is identified with the present-day settlement of Plytra. According to historical sources and Pausanias, Asopos was once a member of the Common of the Eleftherolakones, boasting a secure harbor and its own currency.The city's history is marked by a significant event in 365 AD when a powerful earthquake caused it to sink. Today, the ruins of this ancient city are visible both in the sea and along the coast near Plytra, in the area known as "Kokkines". What visitors see today are the remains of the Roman city of Asopos, which was built upon the foundations of the ancient Greek city.As you explore the site, you'll discover remnants of buildings and tombs in the western part of the settlement, as well as building remains submerged near the port. The acropolis of Asopos, identified with the “Kastei” or “Goulas” hill, housed a temple of Athena. Pausanias also mentioned a temple of the Roman emperors within the city and a sanctuary of Asclepius. The serene atmosphere of Ancient Asopos provides a tranquil escape, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in history and appreciate the stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
