Parnassos National Park: A Sanctuary of Myth and Nature

Parnassos National Park, the second oldest in Greece after Mount Olympus, encompasses 36,000 acres of mountainous terrain between Delphi, Arachova, and Agoriani. The park's name is derived from the hero Parnassos, who, according to Greek mythology, led his people to safety on the mountain during a great flood.Mount Parnassos itself was revered in ancient times as the home of the Muses and a sacred place for Apollo and Dionysus. The slopes of the park are covered in Kefallonian fir, black pine, spruce, and juniper, creating a diverse and aromatic landscape. Wildflowers carpet the meadows in spring and autumn, adding splashes of color to the scenery. The park is also home to a variety of wildlife, including foxes, badgers, hares, birds of prey and reptiles.The park offers numerous opportunities for recreation, including hiking, mountain biking and rock climbing. Several well-marked trails traverse the park, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The E4 European long-distance path also crosses Mount Parnassos. Visitors can explore impressive caves, rocky peaks, and mountain springs with fresh water.At the foot of Mount Parnassos lies Delphi, the ancient sanctuary and home to the famed Oracle. The slopes above Delphi offer panoramic views of olive groves and the surrounding countryside. The park also played a significant role during the Greek Revolution of 1821, serving as a battleground between Greek and Turkish forces.
