High on the rugged slopes near Tithorea, the Cave of Odysseas Androutsos offers a glimpse into Greek history and natural beauty. This cave served as a refuge for 2,000 locals from Velitsa (now Tithorea) in 1822, seeking shelter from the forces of Hurshid Pasha during the Turkish rule. Later, it became the residence of Odysseas Androutsos, a prominent figure in the Greek War of Independence, who transformed it into a fortified home for his family. Androutsos chose this cave for its strategic position, offering an impregnable fortress and an observation point with views across the Lokrida plain. The cave was modified into a living space with rooms, accessible via a wooden ladder used to transport supplies. Androutsos lived here until 1825 when he was arrested on accusations of treason and murdered in the Acropolis. Local legend speaks of a hidden treasure concealed within the cave by Androutsos, but no such treasure has ever been found, though treasure hunters still search for it. Reaching the cave requires a 2-hour hike from Platanakos in Ano Tithorea, following the Velitsa Gorge. The final approach involves climbing iron stairs fixed to the rock face, demanding caution. It is advisable to have climbing knowledge and equipment, or to hire a mountain guide.
