Discover more about The Little Train of Pelion

Embark on a captivating journey through time aboard the Little Train of Pelion, a historic narrow-gauge railway that traverses the stunning landscapes of Mount Pelion. Known locally as "Moutzouris" (smudgy), a nickname earned from the black smoke it used to emit, this charming train offers a nostalgic experience, transporting you back to an era when railway travel was the heart of the region. The railway, with its tracks a mere 60 cm apart, is one of the narrowest in the world. Conceived by Evaristo de Chirico, father of the renowned painter Giorgio de Chirico, the railway was constructed between 1894 and 1903, connecting the city of Volos with the fertile villages of Pelion. Young Giorgio was present during construction, and the railway later inspired his art. The train played a vital role in the region's development, facilitating the transport of goods and people across the mountainous terrain. The 90-minute journey begins in Ano Lechonia, ascending the slopes of Mount Pelion and passing through lush forests of plane trees, olives, and pines. The train makes a brief 15-minute stop in Ano Gatzea, allowing passengers to stretch their legs and enjoy refreshments. Along the way, marvel at the architectural landmarks, including arched bridges and tunnel entrances crafted from carved stone and grey limestone. A highlight is the crossing of the steel bridge of Taxiarchis, also known as "De Chirico's Bridge," offering a unique engineering spectacle. The route ends in Milies, a traditional village known for its historical significance and charming atmosphere. In Milies, a picturesque cobbled path leads from the station to the village square, where you can explore the local culture and history. Visit the Church of Pamegistoi Taxiarches, built in 1741, where the revolution against the Turks began in May 1821. Discover the Library of Milies, home to thousands of rare books and manuscripts, and the Folklore Museum, showcasing the region's heritage. The surrounding area is filled with natural beauty, including caves said to have sheltered the Centaur Chiron and his students.
