Born in Trieste in 1796, Mavrogenous was of aristocratic lineage and dedicated her fortune to the cause of Greek liberation. She rallied support, funded military expeditions, and even led troops, notably contributing to the defense of Mykonos against the Ottomans. The statue, a bust atop a marble pedestal, is located in Manto Mavrogenous Square in the old town. The square itself is a vibrant hub, surrounded by shops and cafes, making it a central point of activity. The statue serves as a reminder of Mykonos' contribution to Greek independence and the courage of its people. Mavrogenous's impact extends beyond Mykonos. She equipped men for battle in the Peloponnese and offered financial support to Samos. Her efforts were recognized when she was granted the rank of Lieutenant General by Ioannis Kapodistrias, the first governor of Greece. Despite her contributions, she spent her final years in poverty and died in Paros in 1848.
