Opening times, essentials, and a few local tips gathered into one calmer, easier-to-scan planning section.
Public Transport
The most common way to reach various points in Santorini is via the public bus system (KTEL), with the main bus station located in Fira. From the airport, take the bus to Fira (approximately €2), and then transfer to a bus to your final destination. Buses to popular destinations like Oia, Perissa, and Akrotiri run frequently, especially during the summer. Tickets are purchased on the bus. Keep in mind that buses can be crowded during peak season.
Taxi
Taxis are available at the airport, port, and in major towns like Fira and Oia. However, the number of taxis on the island is limited, so it can be difficult to catch one, especially during high season. A taxi from the airport to Fira will cost approximately €20-€30. It is advisable to book in advance or arrange a private transfer through your hotel to ensure availability.
Ferry
Santorini is accessible by ferry from Athens (Piraeus or Rafina port) and other Cycladic islands. Several ferry companies operate routes to Santorini, including Blue Star Ferries, SeaJets, and Minoan Lines. Ferry ticket prices vary depending on the type of ferry (conventional or high-speed) and the class of service, ranging from approximately €40 to €140. The ferry from Athens to Santorini takes approximately 5-8 hours. From Athinios port, you can take a bus or taxi to your final destination.
