Nestled in Olympia, Greece, the Μνημείο Πιέρ ντε Κουμπερτέν (Pierre de Coubertin Monument) stands as a tribute to Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the French educator and historian who revived the Olympic Games in the modern era. Born Charles Pierre de Frédy, Baron de Coubertin (1863-1937), he dedicated his life to promoting sports and international understanding. Coubertin's vision led to the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896, revitalizing the spirit of the ancient Games for a new age. He served as the second president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and was a driving force behind the Olympic movement. After his death, in accordance with his wishes, his heart was transported to Olympia and placed within the monument.The monument is located near the International Olympic Academy. The Olympic flame, lit in Olympia, is first brought to the marble altar in the Coubertin Grove before proceeding to Athens and the host city.
