Discover more about Loutro Fortress

The Loutro Fortress, or Koules of Loutro, is a historical site located above the picturesque village of Loutro in southern Crete. Constructed by the Ottomans in 1868, the fortress served as a strategic point to control the harbor and surrounding coastal area, guarding against potential naval incursions and Cretan revolts. The fortress ruins reveal a rectangular structure, approximately 22m x 25m, featuring two elevated towers on the eastern and western sides. A large cistern outside the fortress ensured a water supply for the garrison. The fortress could be easily supplied from the interior and the sea. Visitors can explore the remnants of the fortress, envisioning the lives of the soldiers who once manned its walls. The location provides stunning views of Loutro's whitewashed houses nestled against the cliffs and the Libyan Sea. Loutro itself, only accessible by boat or foot, offers a unique car-free environment, enhancing the serene atmosphere.
