Walking

The Neratze Mosque is located in the heart of Rethymno's Old Town and is easily accessible on foot. From the Old Town entrance near the Fortezza, walk straight into the Old Town area following Arkadiou Street for approximately 300 meters until you reach the square. Continue straight onto Emmanoil Vernardoy Street for another 300 meters. The Neratze Mosque will be on your right.

The Neratze Mosque, also known as Neratzes, is a prominent landmark in Rethymno's Old Town, embodying the city's rich tapestry of Venetian and Ottoman influences. Initially constructed in the late 16th century by the Venetians as the Augustine Monastery and the church of Santa Maria , it served as a place of Christian worship and contemplation for many years. In 1657, following the Ottoman conquest of Rethymno, the church was transformed into a mosque, known as the Gazi Housein or Neratze Mosque. This conversion involved architectural modifications, including the addition of three semi-circular domes and the removal of Christian symbols. In 1890, a large minaret with two stone balconies was added by the engineer George Daskalakis, which is the tallest in the city. The mosque also served as an Ottoman seminary. After the departure of Muslims from Crete in 1924, the building was repurposed and since 1957, it has housed the Municipal Odeon, a conservatory. Today, the Neratze Mosque stands as a vibrant cultural center, hosting musical performances, art shows, and exhibitions, celebrating the town's history and artistic spirit.
