Venetian Clock Tower Footprint: A Glimpse into Rethymno's Past

The Venetian Clock Tower of Rethymno, despite its physical absence, holds a prominent place in the city's history. Constructed in the 16th century during Venetian rule, the tower stood as one of the tallest structures in Rethymno, reaching a height of 20 meters. It was erected on the ruins of a tower that was part of Castel Vecchio, the early fortified residential center of the Venetian city.Located on what was once the Venetian piazza, the Clock Tower, along with the Loggia and Rimondi Fountain, formed the most significant monuments of the era. The tower's south façade was adorned with coats-of-arms and the Lion of St. Mark, the symbol of Venice, along with a sundial displaying the signs of the Zodiac.Over time, particularly during Ottoman rule, the tower's importance diminished as shops and houses were built around it. In 1945, the Municipal Authority made the decision to demolish the Clock Tower to widen the road. Today, only the remains of a doorway, integrated into a shop on Arkadiou Street, mark the tower's original location. Despite its disappearance, the Venetian Clock Tower remains a well-known monument in Rethymno, symbolizing the city's rich Venetian past.
