Discover more about Filerimos Monastery

Filerimos Monastery, located on Filerimos Hill near Ialyssos, Rhodes, is a captivating historical site with a rich and layered past. The hill itself was once the acropolis of ancient Ialyssos, an important city in antiquity. A temple dedicated to Athena Polias once stood here. In the early Christian era, the temple was converted into a basilica dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The monastery as it stands today was largely constructed in the 15th century by the Knights of Saint John, who occupied Rhodes at the time. The architecture is distinct from other Greek monasteries, featuring a Gothic style. The monastery housed the revered icon of the Virgin of Filerimos, which drew pilgrims from afar. Today, the icon resides in the National Museum of Montenegro. During the Ottoman rule, the monastery fell into disrepair but was later restored by the Italians in the 20th century. Visitors can explore the church with its mosaic decorations and the monks' cells. A path leads to a large concrete cross, erected during the Italian occupation, offering stunning views of the surrounding villages and the coastline. The grounds are also home to peacocks that roam freely, adding to the serene atmosphere. Other notable sites include the ruins of a baptistery, the remains of Ancient Ialyssos, and the underground Church of Saint George. The "Road to Golgotha," marked with shrines depicting the Passion of Christ, provides a contemplative walk to the large cross.
