Mount Attavyros, rising 1,215 meters (3,986 feet) above sea level, is the highest mountain on the island of Rhodes. Located in the central-western part of the island, south of the village of Embonas, it presents a striking landmark visible from many points on Rhodes. The mountain's slopes are covered in forests of Brutia pine and Mediterranean Cypress, as well as maquis shrubland, providing a habitat for diverse wildlife. The area is part of the Natura 2000 network, recognized for its importance in conserving rare plant species like the Paeonia clusii subsp. rhodia and various orchids, as well as animal species like the fallow deer (Dama dama) and the Rhodes badger. At the summit, visitors can explore the ruins of a temple dedicated to Zeus Atabyrios, built by Althaemenes, who, according to Greek mythology, chose this location as the closest point to the gods and the only place from which he could see his homeland of Crete. In clear weather, the panoramic views from the top extend to the surrounding islands of the Dodecanese and the Turkish coast. Hiking to the summit of Mount Attavyros is a challenging but rewarding experience. The most popular route starts from the village of Embonas, with a well-marked trail leading to the top. The ascent requires good physical condition and appropriate equipment, including plenty of water, as there are no springs along the way.
