Discover more about Saint Nicholas Fortress

Standing guard over Mandraki Harbour, the Saint Nicholas Fortress is a powerful reminder of Rhodes's rich military history. Constructed between 1464 and 1467 by the Knights of Saint John, under Grand Master Piero Raimondo Zacosta, the fortress was strategically positioned to defend the city. Before the fortress, a Byzantine church dedicated to Saint Nicholas stood on the site, lending its name to the imposing structure. Throughout its history, the fortress faced numerous sieges and suffered damage from earthquakes and Ottoman raids, leading to several phases of reconstruction and expansion. Its thick walls and strategic design helped the Knights Hospitaller resist Turkish attacks for many years. A prominent lighthouse was added in the mid-17th century by the French Society of Ottoman Lighthouses and remains operational today. The fortress also incorporates marble fragments, possibly from Hellenistic monuments, even speculated to be from the Colossus of Rhodes. Today, while the interior is currently closed for exploration, the exterior of the fortress remains a captivating sight. Visitors can stroll along the tree-lined paths of the former moat and admire the well-preserved structure. The fortress is a popular spot for photography, especially at sunset when it is beautifully illuminated.
