Discover more about Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes

Dominating the city of Rhodes, the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes is a striking medieval castle with a rich and complex history. Originally constructed in the late 7th century as a Byzantine citadel, it was transformed in the 14th century by the Knights Hospitaller, who occupied Rhodes from 1309 to 1522. They converted the fortress into their administrative center, palace, and a symbol of their power. The palace served not only as the residence of the Grand Master but also as the main administrative seat and social-cultural center of the island. The Knights made significant modifications, repairing the palace after the earthquake of 1481. After the Ottoman Empire captured Rhodes in 1522, the palace was used as a command center and fortress. The palace was largely destroyed by an ammunition explosion in 1856. During the early 20th century, when Rhodes was under Italian rule, the palace was meticulously restored in a grandiose pseudo-medieval style. It then served as a holiday residence for Victor Emmanuel III of Italy, and later for Benito Mussolini. Today, the Palace of the Grand Master is a museum, showcasing a blend of medieval architecture and historical exhibits. Visitors can explore the grand halls, admire the Hellenistic and Roman mosaic floors brought from Kos Island, and view artifacts from the Knights Hospitaller era. Two permanent exhibitions on the ground floor display representative finds from archaeological excavations in the Medieval Town, including pottery, sculptures, and more.
