Getting there

Walking

From the village of Lindos, the Acropolis is accessible on foot via a stepped path. The walk takes approximately 20-30 minutes and involves a fairly steep climb. Signage is available throughout the village to guide you. Consider wearing appropriate footwear. Alternatively, donkey rides are available from the village center to the entrance of the Acropolis for a fee. Expect to pay around €20 per person.

Public Transport

If arriving by bus from Rhodes Town or other parts of the island, disembark at the main bus stop in Lindos. From there, follow the signs through the village towards the Acropolis. The walk from the bus stop to the Acropolis entrance is approximately 15-20 minutes and involves navigating the narrow streets of Lindos. A local shuttle bus service is available from the main square to help avoid some of the walk for €0.50.

Taxi

Taxis can drop you off at the edge of Lindos village. From there, follow the walking directions to the Acropolis entrance. Expect to pay around €50-€60 for a taxi from Rhodes Town to Lindos. Once in Lindos, a shuttle bus can help you get closer to the Acropolis for €0.50.

Parking

Parking is available outside the main village of Lindos. Several parking lots are located within a short walking distance. Lindos Heart Parking is the only authorized parking lot inside the village, costing €7 per day. St. Paul's Parking, near St. Paul's Bay, also costs €7 per day. From the parking areas, follow the signs through the village towards the Acropolis, a walk of approximately 10-15 minutes.

Overview

Rising 116 meters above the Aegean Sea, the Acropolis of Lindos is a natural fortification that has witnessed the ebb and flow of civilizations for over 4,000 years. According to legend, Lindos was founded by the Dorians in the 10th century BC. The site's strategic importance was quickly recognized, transforming it into a major trading center by the 8th century BC.The Acropolis is home to several significant structures, including the Doric Temple of Athena Lindia, which dates back to around 300 BC. Built on the site of an earlier temple, it was dedicated to Athena Lindia, the patron goddess of Lindos. Other notable features include the Propylaea of the Sanctuary, the Hellenistic stoa, the remains of a Byzantine church, and the fortifications added by the Knights of St. John in the 14th century.Visitors can explore the ancient theater, the Hellenistic Stoa, and the well-preserved ruins of the Temple of Athena. The Acropolis also offers panoramic views of the surrounding harbors and coastline, including St. Paul's Bay, where the Apostle Paul is said to have landed in 57 AD. The site is a testament to the diverse cultures that have shaped the island of Rhodes, offering a unique blend of history, architecture, and natural beauty.
