Discover more about Church of Agios Stylianos

Perched on the cliffs of Fira, the Church of Agios Stylianos is a captivating Catholic church that provides breathtaking views of the volcano, the whitewashed town, and the caldera. This quaint church, constructed with exceptional design, is one of the island's most photographed sites, drawing tourists from all over the world. Dedicated to Saint Stylianos of Paphlagonia, the church's exact construction date is unknown, but manuscripts suggest it has existed since at least 1757. The church has a rich history, having been owned by the Delendas or Krinos family and later donated to the Catholic Diocese of Thera. Despite the disastrous 1956 earthquake that destroyed much of the island, Agios Stylianos remained remarkably intact. It was renovated in 1988 to ensure its continued status as a religious and cultural landmark. The church features a cross-shaped building with a dome and showcases a traditional style of Santorinian architecture. Before its renovation in 1988, the church had baroque characteristics, but now it is designed in the traditional island style. Unlike other churches on the island, which are usually white with blue domes, Agios Stylianos is painted light blue and tan with reddish details. The church also features a lovely bell tower. Travelers can access Agios Stylianos by taking the paved Nomikou Street near the Catholic Cathedral in Fira. Its central location makes it easily accessible, yet it provides a peaceful retreat from the bustling streets of the town. The church provides a peaceful setting that is ideal for meditation and prayer.
