Sarakatsani Folklore Museum: A Tribute to Nomadic Heritage

The Sarakatsani Folklore Museum, located in the heart of Serres, stands as a unique monument to the history and traditions of the Sarakatsani people. Founded in 1979 and housed in a purpose-built structure since 1997, the museum provides an immersive experience into the world of this traditionally nomadic group of Greek shepherds. The museum's exhibits showcase various aspects of Sarakatsani life, with a focus on the final phase of their nomadic existence during the interwar period. Reconstructions of the tsiatoura, the portable shelters used during their travels, and woven huts that served as homes, cheese-making facilities, and educational spaces are featured on the ground floor. These displays offer a tangible understanding of the Sarakatsani's resourcefulness and adaptation to their environment. The first floor is dedicated to Sarakatsani art, primarily the domain of women. Here, visitors can admire intricate textiles, embroideries, and traditional costumes, showcasing the Sarakatsani's rich artistic heritage. The museum also displays tools and equipment used in the entire process of wool production, from spinning the thread to weaving the final products like bedspreads and flokati rugs. Beyond the exhibits, the museum actively engages in cultural preservation. It houses a collection of old photographs from across Greece (1906-1950), a collection of traditional songs categorized and archived, and a room equipped with audio-visual systems. Since 1998, the museum has also offered a two-hour educational program for primary school children, teaching them about Sarakatsani life, weaving, spinning, and hut construction. The museum also has a basement that serves as a storage, library, and conference hall.
