The Bust of Saint Chrysostomos of Smyrna is located in Eleftherias Square in Serres, Greece [i]. It stands as a tribute to Chrysostomos Kalafatis (1867-1922), the Greek Orthodox Metropolitan bishop of Smyrna (present-day İzmir). Born in Triglia, Asia Minor, he served as Metropolitan of Drama before becoming the Metropolitan of Smyrna. Chrysostomos was known for his active role in the Macedonian Struggle and his efforts to protect the Greek population. During the recapture of Smyrna by Turkish forces in 1922, Chrysostomos refused to abandon his people, despite being offered safe passage by foreign powers. He was arrested and ultimately lynched by a Turkish mob for his pro-Greek sentiments. The Orthodox Church has since declared him a saint and a martyr. The bust serves as a reminder of his sacrifice and dedication to Hellenism. Visiting the bust offers a moment for reflection on the turbulent history of the region and the enduring legacy of Saint Chrysostomos. Eleftherias Square, where the bust is located, is a central point in Serres, often hosting local events and providing a place for locals and tourists to gather.
