Saint George Kryoneritis Church: A Byzantine Gem in Serres

Saint George Kryoneritis Church, located in the charming area of Agioi Anargyroi, east of Serres, is a notable Byzantine monument with a rich history. Constructed in 1298, this church is a subject of study in ecclesiastical art. The name 'Kryoneritis' comes from a cold water spring that once flowed in the courtyard.The church is a three-aisled, stone-built basilica that has undergone several alterations over the centuries, incorporating elements from various architectural styles. Inside, visitors can admire valuable hagiographies, with the iconography of Panagia Vrefokratousa from 1694 being particularly noteworthy.The church also carries historical symbolism. In 1383, the city of Serres surrendered to the Ottomans in its courtyard, and in 1913, it hosted the reception of the Greek liberation army.
