Discover more about Triangle Tower

The Triangle Tower, also known as Trigoniou Tower, stands as a proud remnant of Thessaloniki's layered past. Constructed in the 15th century by the Ottoman authorities, it served as an artillery fortification to strengthen the city's defenses after their conquest in 1430. The tower's name may come from the triangular brackets on its walls or from a historical reference to enemies touching the 'Trigonio' during an invasion. Strategically positioned in Ano Poli (Upper Town), the Triangle Tower offers sweeping views of Thessaloniki, the Thermaic Gulf, and, on clear days, even Mount Olympus. It was intentionally built to reinforce weak points in the existing Byzantine fortifications. The tower has also been known as the 'Armory Tower' due to its use as a powder depot and armory until the 17th century. During Ottoman rule, it was sometimes called the 'Chain Tower' or 'Belted Tower' because of a decorative stone band resembling a chain around its structure. Today, visitors can explore the tower and the surrounding Byzantine walls, which stretch for 4 kilometers and are a UNESCO World Heritage site. Although access to the inside of the tower may be limited, the panoramic views and historical atmosphere make it a worthwhile destination. The area around the tower features cafes and shops, perfect for relaxation after sightseeing.
