The Roman Hippodrome of Thessaloniki, constructed in the 3rd century AD, was a monumental architectural achievement and a focal point of Roman society. Located in the eastern part of the ancient city, near what is now Hippodrome Square, it was strategically positioned close to the palace complex and the Rotunda. This made it a central venue for public spectacles such as chariot races, games of chance, and other events that were extremely popular during the Roman period. The Hippodrome's dimensions were impressive, measuring approximately 450 meters in length and 95 meters in width, with a capacity to hold tens of thousands of spectators. The arena was divided by a central wall called the spina, adorned with statues and pools. The imperial box, or kathisma, was accessible from the palace, allowing the emperor to directly enter the Hippodrome.Despite its grandeur, very little of the original structure remains today due to urbanization. However, the name of Hippodrome Square serves as a reminder of the site's historical importance. The Hippodrome is also associated with a dark chapter in the city's history: the massacre of 390 AD, when Emperor Theodosius ordered the slaughter of thousands of citizens within its walls. Today, the area offers a blend of ancient history and modern urban life, inviting visitors to imagine the vibrant spectacles that once unfolded here.
