Acheloos Beach: A River Oasis in Tzoumerka

Discover a hidden paradise in Tzoumerka: swim in the crystal-clear Acheloos River surrounded by breathtaking mountain views.

4.8

Acheloos Beach presents a unique and refreshing summer getaway in the heart of mainland Greece. Located in the Tzoumerka region, also known as the Athamanika Mountains, this isn't your typical island beach but rather a stunning riverside oasis along the Acheloos River. The Acheloos River, the second-longest in Greece, originates in the Pindus Mountains and has been historically significant, even worshipped as a river god in ancient times. The river creates small beaches with crystal-clear waters perfect for swimming during the summer months. The surrounding landscape of towering mountain peaks and verdant forests offers a breathtaking panorama, making it an ideal destination for nature lovers and those seeking a tranquil escape. To reach the beach, visitors typically embark on a short, easy downhill hike from a designated parking area. The trail is family-friendly, and a rope is available to assist with the initial descent. One of the iconic features of the area is the Glystra-Golfari suspension bridge that connects the two banks of the river, adding to the area's charm.

  • Consider bringing a jacket as the temperature can drop in the evening.
  • If you have a 4x4 vehicle, you may be able to drive closer to the beach.
