Getting There

  • Car

    If driving from Mesologgi, take the E951 road. Follow the E951 for approximately 10 kilometers, and you will reach the Archaeological site of Plevrona (Pleuron), which is well signposted. There is parking available at the site. Be careful not to miss the small road on the right, leading to the site. Once started the ascent of impeccable asphalt, after about one kilometer, you'll find yourself in front of a sliding gate closed. It serves to keep out animals, so you have to get off the car, open it and close it again after passing through.

  • Public Transport

    From Patras city center, head to the main bus terminal (Ktel Achaia) located at 1 St. Nicholas Street. At the Ktel Achaia terminal, purchase a ticket for the bus heading to Mesologgi. The journey to Mesologgi will take approximately 45 minutes. Once you arrive at Mesologgi, you can take a local taxi from the bus station to the Archaeological site of Plevrona. The taxi ride should take around 5-10 minutes depending on traffic. A taxi from Mesologgi to the site will cost around 10-15 euros.

  • Walking

    From the Mesologgi bus station, exit and head northeast on E951. Continue walking along this road for approximately 2 kilometers. You will see signs directing you to the Archaeological site of Plevrona (Pleuron) as you approach. The site is located just off the main road, so keep an eye out for the entrance on your right.

The Archaeological Site of Plevrona, also known as Pleuron, is located on a hill northwest of Messolonghi in the Aetolia-Acarnania region. This site reveals the remains of a city that thrived during the Greek classical period. As you explore the ruins, you'll encounter remnants of temples, fortifications, and public buildings, providing insights into the architectural achievements of the ancient Greeks. The city was named after Pleuron, the son of Aetolos. In Homer's Iliad, it is mentioned that Plevrona and Kalydona provided 40 ships for the Trojan War. The old town was destroyed in 233 B.C. by Demetrius II and rebuilt in the new area. The new city had a wall of 3 kilometers long. The city wall is built with hewn stone blocks, consisting of thirty towers and six gates. Among the surviving structures, the theater stands out with its innovative stage that incorporates a section of the wall. You can also see a huge, natural stone tank, part of the market, and the ancient road. The site's strategic location near the Ambracian Gulf contributed to its importance in antiquity. Today, Plevrona stands as a testament to the region's rich cultural heritage.
