Discover more about Archaeological site of Plevrona (Pleuron)

The Archaeological Site of Plevrona, also known as Pleuron, invites visitors to explore the remnants of an ancient Greek city with a rich history. Located on a hill northwest of Messolonghi in the Aetolia-Acarnania region, Plevrona's strategic position was of great importance in ancient times. The city's name is derived from Pleuron, the son of Aetolos. In Homer's Iliad, it is mentioned that Plevrona contributed 40 ships to the Trojan War. Old Plevrona was destroyed around 233 B.C. by Demetrius II and rebuilt on a larger scale in the 3rd century B.C. At its peak, it housed approximately 10,000 residents. The well-preserved city walls, stretching 3 kilometers, feature 11 gates and 36 towers. Within the walls, discover the layout of a classical Greek city, including a theater, temples, agora, baths, and a stadium. The site boasts an impressive water supply system with a large reservoir built into the rock. Today, visitors can explore the ancient walls, foundations, and artifacts while enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Informational plaques provide context, and guided tours offer deeper insights into Plevrona's significance.
