Ancient Ambracia Wall: Echoes of a Powerful Past

The Ancient Ambracia Wall offers a captivating glimpse into the history of Arta, known in ancient times as Ambracia. Founded in 625 BC, Ambracia rose to prominence as a Corinthian colony, becoming a significant economic and naval power. The wall's construction began in the 6th century BC, with major expansions in the 4th century BC, reflecting the city's growing importance.This imposing structure, built from local limestone, stretched an impressive 4.5 kilometers, enclosing over 100 hectares. It served not only as a defense against enemy attacks but also as protection from the frequent floods of the Arachthos River. The wall played a crucial role in the city's defense, withstanding sieges by Philip in 219 BC and later by the Romans in 189 BC.Today, visitors can explore the remnants of this once-mighty wall, which are visible in several parts of modern Arta. The most characteristic sections are found near the Arta Castle, the Holy Metropolis, and the churches of Aghioi Theodoroi and Aghios Markos.
