Discover more about Parthenon

The Parthenon, a former temple dedicated to the goddess Athena, dominates the Athenian Acropolis and serves as an enduring symbol of Ancient Greece, democracy, and Western civilization. Constructed between 447 and 438 BC, during the height of the Athenian Empire, it replaced an earlier temple destroyed during the Persian Wars. The temple was designed by architects Iktinos and Kallikrates, while the sculptor Phidias oversaw the sculptural decorations.Originally, the Parthenon served as a religious center and treasury. Over the centuries, it has been transformed into a Byzantine church, a Roman Catholic cathedral, and a mosque. In 1687, it suffered significant damage when a Venetian mortar round ignited the Ottoman's ammunition stored within. Many of the surviving sculptures were removed in the early 19th century and are now displayed in the British Museum as the Elgin Marbles.Today, the Parthenon is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a major tourist destination. While visitors cannot enter the temple itself, they can walk around the exterior and admire its architecture and detailed sculptures. Extensive renovations have been ongoing since 1975 to preserve this iconic monument.
