Discover more about Stranis Hill

Stranis Hill is a historical landmark of Zakynthos, famed as the spot where Greece's national poet, Dionysios Solomos, penned the "Hymn to Liberty," which later became the Greek national anthem. In the early 19th century, the area was owned by Ludwig Stranis, a friend of Solomos. Inspired by the sounds of the cannons during the siege of Messolonghi and the island's natural beauty, Solomos immortalized the Greek spirit of freedom on this very hill. Today, visitors can explore the park-like setting, surrounded by pine and olive trees. A monument featuring a bust of Dionysios Solomos marks the spot where he was said to have sat beneath a yew tree while writing. The monument also features a sculpture of Freedom, holding a sword. Though the original yew tree is gone, a piece of its trunk can be found in the Museum of Solomos and Kalvos. The hill offers stunning panoramic views of Zakynthos Town, the lush plains, and the Ionian Sea. During the summer, a small amphitheater on the hill hosts plays and musical events. Stranis Hill provides a tranquil space to reflect on the island's literary and historical heritage.
