Discover more about Fort George

Fort George, constructed between 1706 and 1710, stands as a testament to Grenada's rich and often turbulent past. Originally built by the French and named Fort Royal, it was strategically designed by Francois Blondel in 1666 to protect the harbor and the town of St. George's. Its elevated position provided a commanding view of the surrounding area, crucial for spotting potential invaders. In 1763, when the British gained control of Grenada, they renamed it Fort George in honor of King George III. The British further fortified the structure, recognizing its importance as a key military outpost in the Caribbean. The fort's design reflects classic European fortification, featuring a parade ground, barracks, guardroom, gunpowder magazine, water cistern, and firing galleries. Fort George also holds a significant place in more recent Grenadian history. In 1983, it was the site where Prime Minister Maurice Bishop and several of his cabinet members were assassinated, an event that precipitated the United States-led invasion of Grenada. Today, the fort is home to the headquarters of the Royal Grenada Police Force. Visitors can explore the well-preserved ramparts, wander through the ancient stone fortifications, and view the old cannons. The fort offers unmatched sweeping views of the town, harbor, southern coastline, and the ocean.
