Fort George: A Historic Sentinel Over St. George's

Explore Grenada's history at Fort George: panoramic views, colonial architecture, and a glimpse into the island's strategic past.

4.3

Perched atop a steep hill overlooking St. George's, Fort George is a testament to Grenada's complex colonial history and strategic importance. Constructed between 1706 and 1710 by the French, who initially named it Fort Royal, the fort was designed to defend the island from invaders, particularly the British. Its elevated position provided a commanding view of the harbor and surrounding areas, making it an ideal defensive stronghold. In 1763, after the British seized control of Grenada, the fort was renamed Fort George in honor of King George III. The British further fortified the structure, using it as a key military outpost for over two centuries. The fort's design reflects classic European military architecture, featuring a bastion tracer layout that allowed for comprehensive defensive fire. Visitors can explore the parade ground, barracks, guardroom, and the remnants of a gunpowder magazine and water cistern. Fort George also holds a significant place in Grenada's more recent history. In 1983, it was the site of the execution of Prime Minister Maurice Bishop, an event that triggered the U.S.-led invasion of Grenada. Today, while serving as the headquarters of the Royal Grenada Police Force, parts of the fort are open to the public. Visitors can wander through the stone fortifications, explore the tunnels, and admire the old cannons. The panoramic views from the fort are unparalleled, offering stunning vistas of St. George's, the harbor, the southern coastline, and the Caribbean Sea.
