Fort George, standing 175 feet above the harbor, is the oldest and most historically significant fort in Grenada. Originally constructed by the French between 1706 and 1710 and named Fort Royal, it was designed to protect the island from invaders. Its strategic location provided a clear vantage point of the harbor and St. George's.In 1763, when the British took control, the fort was renamed Fort George in honor of King George III. The fort's design reflects classic European fortifications, featuring a parade ground, barracks, guardroom, gunpowder magazine, water cistern, and firing galleries. It also exhibits a bastion tracer fort design, enabling each level to provide covering fire for the next.Throughout its history, Fort George has been a key site. In 1983, it was the location of the execution of Prime Minister Maurice Bishop, an event that triggered the US-led invasion of Grenada. Today, the fort is home to the headquarters of the Royal Grenada Police Force. Visitors can explore the fort's well-preserved structure, including its stone walls, cannons, and underground tunnels. The fort offers unmatched views of St. George's, the harbor, and the southern coastline.
