Discover more about Grand Etang Lake

Grand Etang Lake, the centerpiece of Grand Etang National Park, is a mesmerizing crater lake set within the heart of Grenada's rainforest. Formed in the crater of a long-dormant volcano, the lake sits 530 meters (1,740 feet) above sea level. Its volcanic origins, dating back thousands of years, lend an air of mystique to the landscape. The lake itself covers approximately 36 acres and reaches a depth of about 20 feet. The surrounding national park, established in 1906, is the oldest and largest protected area in Grenada, encompassing over 3,000 acres of tropical rainforest. This rich ecosystem supports a wide array of plant and animal life, including over 40 species of birds. Keep an eye out for hummingbirds, flycatchers, and the endemic Grenada Hook-billed Kite. You might even spot the non-native Mona monkey swinging through the trees. Visitors can explore the lake and its surroundings via a network of hiking trails, ranging from easy strolls to challenging climbs. The Shoreline Trail loops around Grand Etang Lake, offering glimpses of the water and the imposing Mount Qua Qua. For a more strenuous hike, the Mount Qua Qua Trail leads to the summit of one of Grenada's highest peaks, rewarding hikers with panoramic views. Other trails lead to stunning waterfalls, such as Seven Sisters Falls and Concord Falls. Grand Etang is also steeped in local folklore. Legend has it that a mermaid inhabits the lake's depths, luring unsuspecting men to their doom. While there's no proof of mermaids, the lake does possess an undeniable allure, with uncharted geological networks that cause the lake to bubble when the Kick 'em Jenny volcano is active. The area also holds historical significance, having served as a camp for the Carib people and later as the site of a French stronghold during colonial conflicts.
