Discover more about Lake Antoine

Lake Antoine, located six miles north of Grenville, is a stunning example of a volcanic crater lake. Formed millennia ago, the lake resides within a tuffaceous ring, the circular crater of consolidated volcanic ash. Once measured at 100 feet deep in 1939, siltation has reduced its depth to between 16 and 23 feet. Despite agricultural changes around its slopes, including sugarcane, coconut, and banana crops, Lake Antoine remains a significant wetland ecosystem. Birdwatchers will find a rich biodiversity with herons, ruddy ducks, snail kites, and more. The lake's water level sits approximately 20 feet above sea level, covering 42 acres. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views from a hillside vantage point. While the perimeter trail is not maintained, the track around the rim offers hiking and driving opportunities with a 4WD vehicle. The lake is believed to be hydrologically connected to Grand Etang Lake and St. George's Harbour, showing slight responses to volcanic events in neighboring islands in the past. The lake is named after Captain Antoine, a Carib chief who lived in the area around 1650. Nearby attractions include the River Antoine Rum Distillery and Belmont Estate.
