Discover more about Fort Frederick

Fort Frederick, located on Richmond Hill, stands as a testament to Grenada's rich and turbulent history. Constructed between 1779 and 1783 during the tug-of-war between the French and British empires, this bastion fort offers visitors a unique perspective on the island. What makes Fort Frederick particularly interesting is that despite its strategic importance and formidable appearance, it never actually fired a cannon in battle. Originally built by the French after they seized Grenada from the British, the fort was designed to defend against inland attacks, anticipating the route the French themselves had used to capture the island. This led to its nickname, "the backward-facing fort," as its cannons were positioned to face inland rather than out to sea. However, the Treaty of Versailles in 1783 returned Grenada to British control, who then completed the fort. Standing 244 meters (800 feet) above sea level, Fort Frederick provides breathtaking panoramic views. From its vantage point, visitors can see the colorful town of St. George's, the azure Caribbean Sea, and the lush, mountainous landscape of Grenada. Exploring the fort, you'll find well-preserved ramparts, gun emplacements, and even some short tunnels (bring a flashlight!) that offer insights into its military past. During the 1979 Grenada Revolution, Fort Frederick served as the headquarters for the motorized division of the People's Revolutionary Army. It was also a meeting place for the Central Committee led by Maurice Bishop. Legend has it that Henry Christophe, a key figure in the Haitian Revolution and later the only monarch of the Kingdom of Haiti, once worked on the San Souci Estate and stowed away to Haiti from Fort Frederick. Today, Fort Frederick remains one of the best-preserved forts in the Caribbean, attracting tourists and locals alike with its stunning views and historical significance.
