Fort George: A Historical Sentinel Over St. George's

Perched atop a hill overlooking the capital city of St. George's, Fort George is a prominent reminder of Grenada's rich and often turbulent past. Constructed by the French between 1706 and 1710, it was initially named Fort Royal, designed to protect the island from invaders. Its strategic high-ground location provided a clear view of the harbor and surrounding areas.In 1763, when the British took control of Grenada, the fort was renamed Fort George in honor of King George III. The British enhanced its defenses, using it as a key military outpost for over two centuries. The fort's design reflects classic European military architecture, featuring a parade ground, barracks, guardroom, gunpowder magazine, and cannons.Fort George also holds significance in Grenada's more recent history. In 1983, it was the site where Prime Minister Maurice Bishop and several cabinet members were assassinated, an event that precipitated the U.S.-led invasion of Grenada. Today, while part of the fort houses the Royal Grenada Police Force headquarters, visitors can explore its well-preserved structure, wander through its passages, and admire the stunning views. The fort's old cannons and underground tunnels offer a tangible connection to its storied past.
