The statue is a replica of the original Christ of the Abyss (Cristo degli Abissi) located in the Mediterranean Sea near Genoa, Italy. The statue was gifted to Grenada by the Costa Line, owners of the Italian cruise ship Bianca C, as a token of gratitude to the Grenadian people. In October 1961, the Bianca C caught fire and sank in the St. George's harbor. The Grenadian people heroically rescued over 600 passengers and crew members. The Christ of the Deep stands as a symbol of their courage, hospitality, and the strong connection between the island and the sea.
