Discover more about Fort Frederick

Fort Frederick, one of the best-preserved bastions in the Caribbean, sits majestically on Richmond Hill, offering unparalleled views of St. George's and the Grenadian landscape. Constructed by the French between 1779 and 1783 during their brief recapture of Grenada, the fort was designed to defend against inland attacks, leading to its nickname, the "backward-facing fort". The British completed the fort in 1783 after regaining control of the island. Unlike many military structures, Fort Frederick never saw battle. Instead, it served as a strategic observation point, offering sweeping views of the island's diverse terrain, from the azure Caribbean Sea to the lush, mountainous interior. Visitors can explore the fort's ramparts, gun emplacements, and network of tunnels, gaining insight into Grenada's colonial past. During the 1979 Grenada Revolution, Fort Frederick served as the headquarters for the People's Revolutionary Army's motorized division. The Central Committee, led by Maurice Bishop, also held meetings at the fort during the revolution. Fort Frederick is also linked to Henry Christophe, a key figure in the Haitian Revolution, who is said to have worked as a slave on a nearby estate before stowing away to Haiti. Today, Fort Frederick stands as a testament to Grenada's complex history and offers visitors a chance to reflect on the island's journey through time.
