River Antoine Estate Rum Distillery, nestled in Tivoli, St. Patrick, Grenada, offers a unique journey into the past, showcasing rum production methods unchanged for centuries. Established in 1785, it stands as the oldest operational water-powered distillery in the Caribbean. The estate provides an authentic glimpse into Grenada's rum-making heritage, inviting visitors to witness the traditional processes from sugarcane harvesting to bottling. The distillery is powered by a historic waterwheel, dating back to 1840, which drives the machinery, including the sugarcane crusher. The sugarcane juice is extracted and heated in copper bowls over a wood-burning furnace. The juice ferments naturally in open-air vats, without additives. The remaining sugarcane stalks, known as bagasse, are used as fuel for the furnace and as fertilizer.Visitors can take guided tours to learn about the rum-making process and sample the estate's signature rums. River Antoine produces crystal clear Royal Grenadian Rum, known for its high alcohol content, with two strengths: 150 proof (75% alcohol) and 138 proof (69% alcohol).
