Discover more about Leapers Hill

Leapers Hill, perched on the northern edge of Grenada in the town of Sauteurs, is more than just a scenic overlook; it's a powerful memorial to the island's tumultuous past. Also known as Carib's Leap, this dramatic cliff marks the spot where, in 1651, Grenada's indigenous Carib population made a tragic decision. Rather than surrender to invading French forces and face enslavement, they chose to leap to their deaths into the crashing waves below. The Caribs, a fierce and independent people, had long resisted European colonization. However, as French influence grew, their situation became increasingly desperate. Facing defeat, and with their freedom at stake, the last remaining Caribs made their final stand at this promontory. The event is a defining moment in Grenadian history, symbolizing the Caribs' unwavering spirit and resistance to oppression. The French named the site “Le Morne de Sauteurs,” meaning “Hill of the Jumpers,” in commemoration of this tragic event. Today, Leapers Hill offers visitors a chance to reflect on this history while taking in the breathtaking views. From the top, you can see the Grenadine Islands stretching out to the north, a stunning panorama of the Caribbean Sea. The site is located near St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church, School and Cemetery. While a museum once stood at the site, it is no longer in operation. However, the security guards on-site can provide explanations on request. Walking through the adjacent cemetery adds another layer of contemplation to the experience.
