Fort Matthew: A Historical Sentinel Over St. George's

Fort Matthew, perched on Richmond Hill adjacent to Fort Frederick, is the largest fort in Grenada, offering commanding views of St. George's and its harbor. Built by the French from 1784 to 1790 after they recaptured the island, it was named after then-Governor Edward Matthew. The fort played a crucial role in the struggles between the French and English for control of Grenada.Throughout its history, Fort Matthew has served multiple purposes. Besides its military function, it was also used as a mental institution starting about 90 years after its construction, serving the entire Windward Islands from 1880 until a new facility opened in 1987.
