3.8

Talo'fo'fo' Falls is more than just a waterfall; it's a journey through Guam's natural beauty and history. Located on the Ugum River in the southeastern part of the island, inland from Talo'fo'fo Bay, the falls are a series of scenic cascades that have become a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. The area's history is rich and varied. The original pre-Spanish inhabitants of Talo'fo'fo lived along the Talo'fo'fo and Ugum rivers. The village name itself may come from the Chamorro phrase “entalo' i fe'fo',” meaning 'between the cliffs,' or from 'fo'fo', referring to bubbling springs. Talo'fo'fo Bay was also a landing site for Japanese forces during their invasion of Guam in 1941. One of the most compelling historical aspects of Talo'fo'fo' Falls is its connection to Sergeant Shoichi Yokoi, a Japanese soldier who hid in the jungles of Guam for 28 years after World War II. Discovered in 1972, Yokoi's incredible story of survival has become a part of the falls' allure. Visitors can explore a replica of Yokoi's cave, offering a glimpse into his isolated life. The falls are accessed via the Talo'fo'fo Falls Resort Park, a privately-owned area that enhances the visitor experience. A small admission fee is charged to enter the park. The park includes a cable car ride that provides stunning aerial views of the 30-foot waterfall and surrounding lush greenery. Several bridges allow visitors to walk over and enjoy the water without getting wet. The park also features a Guam Historical Museum, an observation tower, and a gift shop. While at the park, be aware that some attractions, such as the erotic statue park called “Loveland” and the Ghost House, may not be suitable for all visitors.
